Sunday, Aug 16 2026
Nominations have opened to find Taranaki’s top sporting performers and unsung heroes for the 2026 Clelands Construction Taranaki Sports Awards.
Athletes, teams, coaches, officials, clubs and volunteers will all be recognised at the annual awards, which will be held at The Devon Hotel in New Plymouth on Friday, November 20.
Anyone can submit a nomination, with performances and achievements between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026 eligible.
Nominations close at 5pm on Friday, October 2.
Sport Taranaki chief executive Michael Carr said the awards recognised the full breadth of sport in the region, from those working behind the scenes at grassroots level to athletes competing nationally and internationally.
This year also marks a change for the event, with longstanding supporter Clelands Construction increasing its involvement to become the naming-rights sponsor.
Carr said the relationship between Sport Taranaki and Clelands had developed over many years, including through the construction company’s involvement in sporting infrastructure around the region.
“Clelands Construction has been a valued supporter of the Taranaki Sports Awards for many years, so we are delighted to see that partnership grow to another level in 2026,” he said.
“Their decision to become naming-rights sponsor demonstrates their commitment to Taranaki sport and to recognising the people whose dedication, service and achievements make such a difference.”
Clelands Construction managing director Mike Braggins said the company was proud to increase its support of the awards and the wider sporting community.
“We’re proud to further grow our commitment to recognising the importance of sport in Taranaki,” he said.
“Although the awards only take place one night a year, the efforts and impact they recognise are enduring.”
Braggins said sport played an important role in strengthening communities through improving health, creating social connections and local pride, as well as providing opportunities to celebrate excellence.
Successful nominees will receive a complimentary ticket to the awards night, along with recognition of their achievements and increased exposure for their sport, club or community.
Nominations can be made by anyone, although nominees must meet the criteria for their respective award category.
