Football: Moturoa withdraw from Central League
Saturday, Feb 21 2026
New Plymouth club Moturoa AFC have confirmed they will not compete in the 2026 Women’s Central League season, bringing an end to their two-year stint in the competition.
The decision followed what the club described as an extensive off-season review and recruitment process, with officials concluding they could not confidently meet the demands of the 18-match campaign.
Moturoa stepped up to the Central League after winning the Federation League title, earning promotion to the higher tier and the chance to test themselves against some of the strongest women’s sides in the lower North Island.
Over the past two seasons, the club has represented Taranaki football at that level, competing against established programmes with deeper playing stocks.
In a statement posted on social media, the club said a combination of factors had affected its ability to field a competitive and sustainable squad in 2026.
Several players have relocated overseas in pursuit of opportunities, while others have left Taranaki to begin university study.
Ongoing injury concerns and pregnancy-related absences have also reduced available numbers.
The club noted broader logistical challenges that continue to impact football within the region, making it difficult to maintain the depth required for Central League football.
“As a committee, we believe it is both a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that any team entered in the Women’s Central League contributes as credibly as possible to the integrity and standard of the competition,” the statement said.
After careful consideration, the club determined that stepping back for 2026 was the decision that best served the interests of the league, the players and the club. Officials say the focus will now shift to rebuilding depth, strengthening development pathways and ensuring a more sustainable return in the future.
Despite the withdrawal, Moturoa expressed pride in what has been achieved during its time in the Central League.
The club highlighted the commitment shown by players, coaches and volunteers over the past two years and reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to the development of women’s football in New Plymouth and across the wider Taranaki region.
Moturoa also thanked Capital Football for its leadership and support of the Women’s Central League and signalled its intention to maintain a positive relationship with the governing body moving forward.
