Taranaki teenagers Dexter Lock and Scarlett Patterson (pictured) took two of the top prizes in the Legends Mountain Bike Enduro Series held in Rotorua over the weekend.

Lock, aged 16, won the overall series prize for the men’s long course (non-shuttle) event, while Patterson, aged 14, won the overall series prize for the women’s short course (non-shuttle) event.

Conditions were hot and dusty for the 250 competitors in the Redwoods forest park on Sunday. Short course riders had five hours to complete five stages, while long course riders had six hours to complete eight stages.

Riders were able to choose the long or short course and competed in a range of categories, including Shuttled (riders are able to take vehicle transport between stages), Non-Shuttled (riders have to ride the entire course) and E-bike.

Legends is the most popular enduro series in the NZ mountain biking calendar, with riders from throughout New Zealand travelling to Rotorua to compete.

Riders compete in age groups, however medals are awarded only to the overall fastest riders across all age groups. Sunday’s race was the third and final round in the series, which started in October 2025.

Both Lock and Patterson clocked the fastest overall times in their respective categories in all three events, beating the senior riders to take the top spots in the series.

Both riders are members of New Plymouth Mountain Bikers and coached by Andrew Patterson through the Patterson Training MTB Development Team.
