Golf: Miya leads NZ Age Group Championships in NP

Pegasus golfer Yuki Miya fired a 5 under 67 to lead the U19 Boys at the New Zealand Age Group Championships being played at New Plymouth Golf Club.  

A brilliant performance despite challenging conditions, Miya made a superb birdie into the wind on the Par 3 sixth hole and followed it up with an eagle on the following Par 5 combined with four birdies on the coastal back nine. He has a 4-shot lead ahead of fellow Cantabrian Alfie Bell who is at one under, Australian Miles Romagnolli and Napier’s Cordell Henare are tied in 3rd position with rounds of 74.

William Dunsmore from Levin Golf Club has a 4-shot lead in the U16 Boys firing a 3 under 69, enjoying 4 birdies in his round.  Australian Harry Gourlay, Nelson’s Elijah Barney and Whitford Parks Jacob Qian will be chasing his lead in round two. Local New Plymouth Boys High student Louie Wright is in the mix recording a 76.

Teresa Wang from Pupuke Golf Club leads the U16 girls with a 2 under 70, Wang had a mixed round but showcased her skill by making 6 birdies on a well-presented course with long, challenging rough. Japan’s Lannie Inoue is two shots behind.

Hunter Edwards leads the U19 girls with a one over 73, the second round promises exciting competition as players look to close the gaps and make their moves. In the chase Ha Young Park 73, Rianne Li 74 and Emma Zheng 75.

With a record entries and a capped field of 176 low single figure handicapped players,  the best of the best will be looking to improve and make the cut after Round Two.
